iThemba LABS (Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences) has hosted the 11th Neutron and Ion Dosimetry Symposium (NEUDOS-11) from 12-16 October 2009. The Symposium was held under the auspices of the European Dosimetry Group (EURADOS). All previous Symposia in the series that began in 1972 have been held in Western Europe.
Key elements of the Symposium were the encouragement of both scientists and students from developing countries to attend and the subsidization of the expenses of African delegates.
A full and diverse scientific program was offered and this encompassed the complete range of neutron and ion dosimetry topics. In addition both oral and poster “Young investigators” sessions were held. At these sessions presentations on any topic related to the dosimetry of any radiation modality (i.e., not limited to neutron or ion dosimetry) were presented.
Neutron dosimetry is of great importance for radiation safety purposes at both accelerator and reactor installations, for quantifying the effects of cosmic ray exposures, and for other purposes. It is also a fundamental aspect of fast neutron and neutron capture therapy. Furthermore, neutron production in high-energy x-ray therapy, as well as in ion-beam therapy, is of increasing concern because of growing fears of secondary cancer induction. Ion-beam therapy facilities are proliferating rapidly all over the world and dosimetry issues are of major significance. Read more ....
